Greenwich Council Contingent
The 2010 National Scout Jamboree will be held at Fort A.P. Hill in Virginia from July 26 through August 4, 2010. It is anticipated that over 40,000 scouts from across the United States and from other countries will attend. This will be a very special jamboree, as the 2010 jamboree will celebrate the 100th year anniversary of scouting in the United States.
Continuing its strong tradition of attendance of BSA National Scout Jamborees, the Greenwich Council will send a contingency of scouts, adult leaders, and staff to the 2010 National Scout Jamboree. To manage this process, the council established the Greenwich Council 2010 National Scout Jamboree Steering Committee. The committee is responsible for organizing, planning, and managing the Greenwich 2010 National Scout Jamboree contingency and program.
The steering committee was formed in August of 2007. Recruiting and filling the Greenwich Jamboree Troop adult leader positions for the Troop was the first priority. The committee selected Mike Wellington as Scoutmaster of the Greenwich Troop.
Mike has served as Scoutmaster, Troop 11, and Crew Advisor Crew 11. He is an Eagle Scout. And, his Jamboree experience includes acting as Senior Patrol Leader for the 1997 National Jamboree and Scoutmaster for the 2007 World Jamboree.
Eligible Greenwich Scouts and Webelos are being recruited to fill the jamboree troop. Applications are being accepted now on a first come basis. As this will be a very special jamboree celebrating the 100th anniversary of scouting in the United States, interest and demand for scout openings are high. Greenwich troop openings are limited and a waiting list will be established.
Our troop will consist of 36 Scouts organized into troop leadership and four patrols of eight scouts. Every troop will select four scouts to fill the Sr. Patrol Leader, Assistant Sr. Patrol Leader, Quartermaster, and Troop Scribe positions. Each patrol will have at a minimum a Patrol Leader and Assistant Patrol Leader. The patrol method will be used at jamboree and while on tour.
In addition to attending the jamboree, Greenwich scouts and their troop leaders will take a pre-jamboree tour to Gettysburg Battlefield, Busch Gardens with overnights at a Holiday Inn featuring a swimming pool and pizza party. This tour will begin two days before the Jamboree and will end at Fort A.P. Hill.
