Good Turn for America in the Greenwich Council

Since the BSA's inception in 1910, members have learned to live the principles of the Scout Oath and Law through community services and "helping other people at all times." With that history in mind, the BSA has developed a service initiative - Good Turn for America.

What began with a singular act o f service on a foggy London night quickly evolved into daily Good Turns and then into more encompassing national initiatives. These have included selling war bonds, collecting rubber and scrap metal, growing victory gardens during World War II, and more recently, Scouting for Food.

We now have the opportunity to raise our levels of community service and increase awareness of the Scouting program within our neighborhoods. Nationally, the Boy Scouts of America has partnered with The Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity, the American Red Cross, the American Cancer Society, America's Second Harvest, and the Department of Homeland Security to increase our efforts in meeting the challenges of today.

Good Turn for America is a national call to service by the Boy Scouts of America that will help provide adequate food and shelter and to develop good health habits in our nation. To address these issues, we are collaborating with some of the most respected service organizations working in each of these areas.

These lead organizations, and thousands of other local groups, will work to provide volunteer opportunities for youth and adults to fight hunger, provide shelter, and teach the habits of healthy living.

Good Turn for America will build on our members' and participants' current service efforts and will also include important partnerships with other community service organizations. These partnerships will provide many additional avenues for all of our members and participants to provide community service.

The success of Good Turn for America is dependent on support from our Scouting units. If you are just getting started with a Good Turn for America project or are looking for resources, we have them. Resources include service project ideas, tips for getting started, service project promotional assistance, tips for telling your story through your local media, and help in reporting your service hours.

Your community organization's participation in Good Turn for America is vital in positively impacting the community. You can help by becoming involved in existing service projects, offering support (manpower, supplies, financial), or assisting with the promotion of Good Turn for America within your community.

Scouts and volunteers have an opportunity to make a positive difference in their communities while learning habits of service that will last a lifetime. We need your assistance to fight hunger, provide shelter, and teach the habits of healthy living. You do not have to be affiliated with any of the collaborating organizations involved in Good Turn

for America in order to participate. For more information, visit http://www.goodturnforamerica.org/
